UGANDA has had its first food processing company receive double international certificates in food safety and quality management.

Riham, makers of biscuits, juice and mineral water, received their ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems and ISO 2200:2005 Food Safety Management Systems from Government on Wednesday.

ISO 9001The certificates were handed over by the minister of state for investment, Aston Kajara, and the chairman of the Uganda Investments Authority, Patrick Bitature, to the company’s chairman, Ahmad Yasser. They were flanked by Riham’s Managing Director Kaleel Rahman.

This is the first food processing company to win an award in the country. Nile Breweries was the first bottling company to get double certification in Uganda.

The certificates are accepted world-wide as international standards that define quality and safety.

The certificates also help in removing substandard commodities from the market, since Uganda is one of the largest recipients of counterfeit products in the region, according to a survey by the East African Community.

The ISO-9001:2008 is a standard developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation. The certifications are used as tools of proof that products, services and operations are of international quality.

ISO 22000:2005 specifies requirements for a food safety management system where an organisation in the food chain needs to demonstrate its ability to control food safety hazards.

Yasser, on receiving the awards, said they were committed in maintaining high quality in their products and to providing employment to Ugandans.

“We have embarked on growth and expansion by widening our products and introducing carbonated soft drinks, and natural fruits juices,” Yasser added.

He said the expansion has been due to the good political and business environment created by the Government.
